My purpose here is to explain the value of
establishing a unified representation system of reason
for public use.
Viewing reasoning as a process costing time, we will see how
we can minimize the cost (and maximize the benefit)
of time spent reasoning in our common efforts.
The basic idea of reason,
which, among others, Aristotle recognized, is this:
In aiming towards the good life, we interact with the world
as we understand it.
Within the realm of recognized possibility,
we choose to take the best possible actions.
Practically oriented, this is a matter of choosing
what to do with our time.
We value our time and so we reason to choose
the action making the best use of it.
Better reason leads to better purpose-accomplishing action.
There is much that we share in common
as humans in our pursuits.
We have similar physical needs and
all operate within a common cooperative system.
For many of our common purposes, many have already reasoned
sufficiently effective choices of means.
For example, for the purpose of effective communication,
we have languages.
Language and logical reason are fundamental to
our cooperative society.
Our predecessors have already spent the time
to construct and develop the instrument of language
for representation and communication of meaningful thought,
and we teach it to our young, so that they can use it
to learn already established reason,
develop their own reason and
communicate with others.
Human intelligence has developed greatly,
constructively building scientifically on
insights preserved by language
over time in a focused effort
to minimize costs of valued activities.
Obvious examples of intelligently reasoned progress include
that in energy utilization, transportation and communication.
With information technology today, we have the ability
for all to communicate with all with minimal cost.
People work, learn and play online.
Even though we have made great progress in reducing the cost
of information communication for all,
we have yet to utilize the full potential
of ideally effective communication
for activities requiring the use of reason.
We are not far from realizing the potential.
We have the necessary capabilities.
We have only failed to intelligently coordinate our reason.
The idea is to make shared reason ideally effective with
the establishment of a common method of shared reasoning,
which allows for clear communication and unique identification
of information of interest for all.
In the following I will provide a full specification of the system,
including the format of information representation and
the methods of various types of information communication.
The practical use and value of the system will become clear as
we contrast system structure with currently existing technology.
Blogs, Social Networking, Wikipedia and Digg will be
some of the current services with which we will compare
our proposed system to better understand costs and benefits.
